This Avocado BLT recipe takes your average bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich to a whole new level. A healthy dose of creamy mashed avocado adds an exciting element and extra layer of goodness to this already delicious sandwich.

I've never been much of a sandwich girl. I love bread and I love stuff that goes inside a sandwich, but I sometimes feel like there's either too much bread or too much mayo or not enough inside or too much inside. I guess I just feel like I rarely find the perfect sandwich.
Anywho, it has to be an extremely delicious sandwich for me to be excited about it. And this Avocado BLT is considered extra special in my opinion.
What are Avocado BLTs?
Avocado BLTS are your basic BLT (Bacon Lettuce & Tomato) sandwich with avocado on them. I've also seen this sandwich labeled as a BLAT (Bacon Lettuce Avocado and Tomato), but I think the avocado deserves its own whole word instead of only a letter ha!
Why you should make this Avocado BLT Recipe
In the summertime, when tomatoes are ripe, it's the prime time to make a BLT. Plus, they are great to make for a crowd because you can assemble them all at one time.
The beautiful thing about these sandwiches is their simplicity. Only a few ingredients needed to make such a tasty sammy -- that's my kind of meal!

How to Make Avocado BLTs
Some people make their avocado BLT with layers of bacon, lettuce, avocado slices, and tomatoes between two slices of bread. However, I really like to mash the avocado and use it and the sauce or barrier to keep your bread from getting soggy from the tomatoes.
Here's how you make it:
- Cook the bacon.
- Mash the avocado with lime juice to keep it from turning brown. At this point you can add a little minced jalapeños for an extra kick.
- Toast your bread if desired.
- Slice your tomatoes and let them sit on a towel to absorb some of their moisture (to keep your sandwich from being soggy).
- Wash and dry the lettuce.
- When ready to eat, assemble the sandwiches by spreading a thin layer of avocado on each slice of bread. Layer 4 slices with lettuce, sprinkle with a little salt. Top with bacon, sprinkle with a teeny bit of salt. Add the tomatoes, and season generously with black pepper and sprinkle with a little more salt. Then add a slice of bread (with the avocado facing the tomatoes) and cut in half. Enjoy!
Tips for Making Avocado BLTs
The most important thing to know about this sandwich is that you must lightly salt every single later. I didn't and the sandwich was kinda lame. Then I added salt, and whoa it was perfect!
I know it sounds like a lot of salt, but I'm talking a teeny tiny sprinkle of salt. And it really makes all the difference in the world. Trust me.
Tip for Slicing Tomatoes
The best knife for slicing tomatoes is a very sharp knife, and I find that a serrated knife is preferable.
Make Ahead Tips
I don't recommend assembling these sandwiches until just before serving. However, you can do a few things beforehand to make things easier on your life when you're ready to prepare.
You can cook the bacon, slice the tomatoes, and wash & dry the lettuce. I actually used already washed & dried lettuce from the store, but you could easily use large pieces of lettuce from a head of green leaf lettuce or romaine lettuce.
Variations & Substitutions
Making this sandwich allergy friendly:
This sandwich is naturally dairy free and egg free, and it can easily be made gluten free by using gluten free bread. I love regular bacon, but I suppose you could try a vegetarian version of bacon as a replacement. I certainly cannot vouch for this idea, but it's an option to have a vegan/vegetarian sandwich if desired.
What to serve with this dish
These sandwiches are quite filling in my opinion, but you could add an extra side of veggies if you want. Or a cold soup like this Pineapple Cucumber Gazpacho would also be amazing.
For a drink, I think an ice cold beer really hits the spot with this sandwich.
Final thoughts on Avocado BLTs:
I love making them for a crowd because it's easy to make multiple sandwiches at a time and serve them. I made them for my family when we were all together at our bay house over the summer, and they were a hit for lunch.
