These cheese sticks are a healthy version of the delicious fried appetizer found in restaurants. Using string cheese & baking them makes for a wholesome snack
Yesterday, I admitted that I haven't been in the mood to cook.
And today I'm going to admit that I have serious "same snack burnout"
I'm getting a little tired of my daily snacks of nuts & a smoothie after I workout and string cheese before dinner. I mean, one can eat string cheese everyday for so long...
Like I used the bacon wrapped chicken to get me out of my cooking rut, I made something equally tasty to get me out of my snack rut. Using my boring snack {string cheese} & making it more exciting {baked cheese sticks} was a success.
These are really fun snacks because they taste similar to the ones you get at a restaurant that are battered & fried, but these are healthier since you're using whole wheat bread crumbs & baking them.
Make these for a satisfying snack, as an appetizer for a party, or to entice your children to eat something that gives them some protein but looks fun.
I like to serve mine with marinara or pizza sauce {extra veggies!}, but you can always eat these alone.
Enjoy!

Baked Cheese Sticks
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup whole grain bread crumbs {from about 1 slice bread}
- 1/4 teaspoon salt-free Italian seasoning
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoon water
- 4 pieces string cheese cut in half
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment. Rub with about 1 teaspoon of if desired. Set aside.
- In a sandwich sized zip-top bag, mix together the bread crumbs & Italian seasoning.
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the egg & water, and add 2 cheese sticks halves, making sure they are well covered.
- Add the egg coated cheese sticks to the bag with the bread crumbs, and shake until fully coated. Put the cheese sticks back in the egg and shake in the bread crumbs again.
- Put the breaded cheese sticks on the prepared baking sheet.
- Repeat process with the remaining cheese halves until all are breaded and on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is just starting to melt. DO NOT OVER-BAKE (or they'll turn into piles of melted cheese ha). Enjoy!
