A delicious, two-ingredient dessert or breakfast that takes less than 10 minutes to make. Plus, the entire recipe is less than 100 calories
This is hardly a recipe, but I feel like it's something I have to share with you!
Back in the 8th grade, one of my friends introduced me to grapefruit, and I am forever grateful to her {thanks Louise!} because when a grapefruit is good, it is oh so very good!
Any time of the day is great for grapefruit - breakfast, lunch, dinner, after dinner, snack, dessert. It's always a good time for a grapefruit in my opinion.
Up until recently, I would just cut it {see below for my step-by-step grapefruit cutting} and eat it straight from the bowl.
One of my friends gave up sweets for Lent, so they eat something like fruit for dessert. The other day I suggested broiling grapefruit because I'd heard it was really good.
Obviously, I then needed to try it out to see for myself what the potential fuss was all about.
Who knew how good something already so delicious could be after doing something as simple as broiling it?!
I did one half without any sugar {just in case you gave up sweets for Lent which would include sugar, obvi}, one with brown sugar, one with regular sugar, and one with maple syrup because I thought that sounded interesting.
Whew, trying out broiled grapefruit sprinkled with sugar is a tough job but somebody's gotta do it ๐
Which one did I like best?
Every single version was good!
Moral of the story: if you aren't into adding sugar, then just broil it. If you're ok with adding a little sugar {we're talking a teaspoon}, then use whatever you have in your pantry - regular sugar, brown sugar, or maple syrup. I'm sure honey would be good too, but I'll leave that up to you to try.
Just like regular grapefruits, these are great anytime - breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, dessert.
These would be a good healthy dessert for guests because they look pretty and take all of 60 seconds {per grapefruit} to prepare with 7 minutes to broil. Serve with a little dollop of yogurt or whipped cream - yum!
I ate mine for breakfast with some eggs. But not together; just next to each other.
I want the whole grapefruit, but you could just eat one half and share the other with someone else. It's up to you. This certainly isn't a dessert you need to feel bad about having seconds of ๐

Broiled Grapefruit
Ingredients
- 1 medium grapefruit
- 1 teaspoon sugar {granulated sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup}
Instructions
- Preheat broiler. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.
- Cut grapefruit in half and cut the sections {see below}. Sprinkle each half with ยฝ teaspoon sugar.
- Broil for 5-7 minutes until sugar has caramelized on top.
Cutting a grapefruit:
1. Start with a serrated knife
2. Cut the grapefruit in half horizontally
3. Put it in a bowl
4. If it's not sitting up right by itself turn it over and slice a small piece of the bottom off to give it a flat surface to sit on
5. Now it sits up straight without wobbling
6. Using the serrated knife, cut around the edges of the grapefruit insides and the skin
7. Go around the entire diameter of the grapefruit
8. Now cut out each section of the grapefruit
9. Try to cut each piece on the inside part of each section - use the "lines" as guides and cut on the inside part of them for each section
10. Repeat with the entire grapefruit and you're done!
