Nutrient rich smoothie made with chocolate, bananas, sweetpotatoes, almond butter, and a hint of maple syrup. Trust me, it's delicious!
Disclosure: I received free samples of California sweetpotatoes mentioned in this post. By posting this recipe I am entering a recipe contest sponsored by the California Sweetpotato Council and am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.
So far, my sweetpotato week has consisted of savory recipes which is sort of funny considering it's about sweet potatoes.
Today I made a chocolate sweetpotato smoothie that is mighty tasty and perfect for a post workout snack or a quick and portable breakfast.
I am obsessed with smoothies; they are a great way to get in fruits & veggies. Plus, they are delicious
I look forward to my post workout smoothie everyday. Some days, it's the main reason I actually go exercise ha. {You can see my typical smoothie recipe here or my favorite breakfast smoothie here}
But I've got a new contender for my smoothie rotation, and it's this Chocolate Sweetpotato Smoothie. Boy oh boy is it tasty.

It has a cooked, cooled, and peeled California sweetpotatoes, fresh spinach, bananas, almond milk, almond butter, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and a touch of cinnamon and maple syrup.
I highly recommend freezing the banana and the cooked & peeled sweetpotato before making this smoothie. I didn't the first time and I wanted it to be frostier.
To cook the sweetpotato, I just washed the sweetpotato and wrapped it in foil, then baked it in a 400°F oven for 45-60 minutes until a knife slid through it really easily. Then I took the peel off and refrigerated it until it was cold. {I wish I had put it in the freezer}.
Want to know more about California sweetpotatoes? Well, they are grown in soft sand and hand harvested which lends to a much more attractive appearance. Their texture is far superior to other sweet potatoes because California sweetpotatoes are moist & sweet not dry & starchy. Oh and it's now spelled as one word!
I've already made this 4 times this week ha and the frozen banana and frozen sweet potato make this thing taste like a milkshake ~ perfect for dessert.
The cocoa powder is optional. I've made it with and without, so if you're not a huge chocolate fan, then just omit it. The smoothie isn't the prettiest but its taste more than makes up for it.

I'm curious, but somewhat cautious about giving this a try. How would you describe the flavor? Does one ingredient/flavor dominate? Trying to imagine how these will meld together.
Thanks for another great idea and inspiration to try new things!

Hey Kristin! Thanks for your comment. The strongest flavors in the smoothie are the banana and chocolate with a hint of almond. The sweetpotato just lends its sweetness and less of its flavor. Even though the ingredients list is somewhat interesting, I feel like all the flavors worked together quite well. I have had this smoothie everyday this week and just cooked more sweetpotatoes for next week. I am drinking it right now so I can make sure to accurately describe it to you and I have yet to taste any hint of spinach. It is really thick because of the sweet potato and banana but you could thin it with more almond milk or add ice {I don't have ice}.
Basically, if you like chocolate, banana, and almond milk/butter then I think you will like this! {Sorry for the terribly long explanation :)}

Thank you so much for that fantastic description! I"m definitely going to try it - I just picked up some sweet potato (sadly, not from California) at the grocery.
I do enjoy each of the ingredients on their own, just couldn't quite wrap my brain around them all together. I love the idea of getting some spinach in while enjoying the banana and chocolate flavors. Brilliant recipe.
Thanks!
