Happy holiday themed coffee time! Woohoo!
I've had this recipe ready to go since March, and I am so excited to finally share it with y'all. Let me explain...
As I was packing all my stuff together to make my move from New Orleans to home (Mobile, Alabama), I found many things that I loved but didn't make sense to take with me. One must downsize when they're moving across the country (and/or always).
Yes, I love adorable Christmas themed straws, but does it really make sense for me to pack them and then take them 2000 miles across the country to San Diego?
Believe me, I did not make this decision lightly. (Note: it took me one million hours to pack. God bless my mom, sister, aunt, and other family members who helped me move. I'll make you this coffee concentrate when I'm home).
My best solution was to not let them go to waste by using the straws "in" a recipe. So I decided to make some coffee concentrate that would be perfect for Christmastime, arguably the greatest time of year.
I was definitely not upset to celebrate Christmas in March, especially since it got cold for like 3 days. And by cold I mean 50 degrees. Yes, I'm a wimp in cold weather. But then it got hot two days later, so I was happy to make iced gingerbread lattes.
Y'all. These are everything you are expecting and more. I love flavored coffee but hate the junk that's in those mixes.
Warming spices are all you need to make your coffee taste like Christmas. I don't even use a sweetener in my coffee because the spices help bring out the natural sweetness in the milk.
This coffee concentrate is just like the cold brew coffee you find in grocery stores except it's much cheaper, and you get to flavor it to make your morning cup of joe even more exciting.
One need not have an extra gadget to make cold brew coffee. However, I find it infinitely easier to make it with this wonderful contraption.
Coming from someone with very limited kitchen storage space, I only have very important kitchen gadgets here. And this one is worth finding space to store.
Bonus: coffee concentrate (or cold brew coffee) is simple to make! You have two options:
- Easier option: Use a Filtron or Toddy to make your coffee concentrate. You add all the ingredients to the cold brew coffee maker then strain.
- Option for someone who doesn't have special equipment: Stir together the coffee grounds, spices, and water. Cover and let sit overnight. Then strain.
Refrigerate the concentrate until it's time to make a new batch. One batch lasts me a few weeks with one to two cups per day.
There are lots of different ratios you'll find online but what I use is one 12 oz. bag of coffee grounds {about 4 cups coffee grounds} to 6-7 cups water. It makes about 4 cups of coffee concentrate.
I highly recommend making two batches: one for yourself and one to give to others.
You might also want to give your friend one of these cold brew coffee makers for Christmas because otherwise, you'll be making them coffee all year long 😉
