    Halloween Cheese Crackers

Only 5 ingredients make up this festive and tasty recipe for Halloween Cheese Crackers that are perfect for your snack table

    Halloween Cheese Crackers from @memeinge

Most of my recipes are made by yours truly, but occasionally I'll have some special helpers that cook with me {like my niece and nephew or my tasty treat loving cousin}.

When housesitting over the weekend, one of the girls, Margaret Ann, made these adorable snacks ~ Halloween Cheese Crackers.

Didn't she do a fabulous job?!

The idea popped into her head as we were lounging on Sunday morning sipping our coffees and enjoying our lingering breakfast. What would we make today while the parents were still away?

Her favorite cheese crackers! that was the answer.

After a quick trip to the corner grocery store with two blocks of sharp cheddar in hand, she started out making a double-batch using all-purpose flour. Halfway through we realized we should try doing them with white whole wheat flour.

Another quick trip {and 1300 steps later} for more cheese and we had the second double batch ready to go in a flash. The dough is incredibly simple to make. Just pop everything in a food processor and refrigerate before rolling out and cutting into desired cracker shapes.

Wait... why did we decide to make two double-batches? We're still not sure. Probably because these are adorably pop-able and so fun to eat.

They are similar to cheese crackers you can buy at the grocery store but don't have artificial ingredients or added sugar or any of that nonsense.

I won't claim that these are healthy, though. Yes, they are improved. But still not healthy.

White whole wheat flour is used in place of the all-purpose flour. It has a lighter texture than regular whole wheat flour but is still a whole grain {and not refined like all-purpose flour is}. Personally, I only use white whole wheat flour because I think regular whole wheat flour is just too heavy and not a comparable substitute for all-purpose flour.

Halloween Cheese Crackers can be made into any shapes, but the pumpkin shapes make it impossible not to include them on your Halloween snack table.

For non-Halloween times, change the shape or roll them out and just cut into squares. Whatever shape works.

I recommend rolling the dough nice and thin. That will give you the crispiest cracker and prevent them from being soggy {ew}. While the dough is really simple to make, the rolling out process takes a little extra time but isn't too terribly hard.

Be sure to keep the dough that's not being used chilled in the refrigerator. This will make you life easier when you go to roll the dough. There are few things more frustrating than dough sticking to the counter. I like to use wax or parchment paper to roll out dough on but that's just my personal preference.

I prefer to eat these within the first 12 hours they are made. Luckily, they are gobbled up quick {since they're so tasty}. One batch makes about 3 cups of crackers; a double batch makes about 6 cups.

While they may not be the healthiest cracker ever made, they are incredibly adorable and the perfect addition to your Halloween snack table.

    Ingredients

    • 8 oz sharp cheddar cheese freshly grated
    • 4 tablespoon butter cut into cubes
    • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • dash cayenne pepper {optional}
    • 2 tablespoon cold water

    Instructions

    • Put the cheddar cheese, butter, white whole wheat flour, salt, and cayenne pepper in a food processor. Pulse until the dough comes together and looks like crumbly, wet sand.
    • Add in one tablespoon water and pulse a few times to combine. Add in remaining tablespoon of water and pulse to combine. {Don't over-mix}.
    • Remove from food processor and split the dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and chill at least 15-20 minutes.
    • When ready to roll the dough, preheat oven to 325*F and line a few baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • Roll out dough to desired thickness {I prefer it to be very thin so the crackers are crispier} and cut into desired shapes. Transfer to prepared baking sheet and bake in preheated oven for 18-22 minutes until baked and crispy. Let cool for at least 10 minutes on baking sheet to get a little crisper.

Yum! I loooove cheese crackers, but I've never tried making them before. I love that you've used white whole wheat flour in here too to make them a touch more healthy than usual. Definitely something I'll be trying soon!
