Looking for Christmas gift ideas? How about cookie dough because everyone loves cookies! This year, give the gift of cookie dough, so your recipient can make cookies whenever they want! A great homemade gift for the holidays.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough from Living Well Kitchen

Cookies are a great homemade Christmas gift, but not everyone wants to eat cookies right now or wants them just hanging around their house going to waste.

How about giving someone the gift of cookies at their own leisure?

Giving homemade cookie dough gives them the ability to make one, two, or all two dozen cookies whenever they feel like it.

It can make them seem like prepared holiday elves when friends drop by, and they have cookie dough already made and can pop the dough balls in the oven for a quick dessert.

Who doesn't love to seem super prepared and on top of things?

More importantly, who doesn't love chocolate chip cookies?

Feel free to use any cookie dough you like, but I thought this one did a good job. I meant to use a mixture of white whole wheat and all purpose flour but I forgot to use some all purpose flour. And we all still enjoyed the cookies even though they were 100% whole wheat.

Any who, you can make this dough in a snap. Then you roll the dough into balls and pack it in an airtight container. If you're feeling fancy, tie a bow around the container -- or just buy a festive container so you don't have to bother -- and voila! homemade cookie dough ready for your recipient.

I am in love with this idea because I love having cookie dough in my freezer and I love being able to make cookies whenever without having to get the mixer out and scrounge up all the ingredients then dirty up my kitchen.

It lasts for a few months, and it's nice when you need cookies ASAP. The cookie dough can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, but you might as well just stick it in the freezer because it will keep longer.

Remember to let your recipient know how to bake these cookies: Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Put balls of dough onto a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 7-8 minutes until cookies are set {they will cook a little more on the baking sheet}. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Enjoy!

    Ingredients

    • ยฝ cup butter 1 stick, room temperature
    • ยพ cup packed brown sugar {light or dark}
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 ยฝ cup white whole wheat flour
    • ยฝ teaspoon baking soda
    • ยผ teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a baking sheet with a little bit of oil or butter. Set aside. [ignore this step if you are making to give as gifts]
    • Add the butter and sugar to the bowl of an electric mixer and mix on medium-low speed until completely combined.
    • Beat in egg and vanilla, scraping down sides half way through mixing.
    • In a medium sized bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add mixture to butter-sugar mixture, scraping down sides half way through mixing. Mix just until combined {don't over mix}.
    • Fold in chocolate chips. Drop tablespoon-sized spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 7-8 minutes until cookies are set {they will cook a little more on the baking sheet}. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Enjoy!

    For gift giving:

    • Ignore the instruction to preheat oven and grease baking sheet. Prepare the dough and roll into tablespoon sized balls. Put in an airtight container lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Include the instructions for cooking: Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a baking sheet with a little bit of oil or butter. Set aside. Put balls of dough onto a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 7-10 minutes {depending on if dough is refrigerated or frozen} until cookies are set {they will cook a little more on the baking sheet}. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Enjoy!

    Notes

*The dough can be frozen up to two months. You will need to increase baking time by a minute or two if the dough is frozen.
