You can't beat the convenience of store bought items. I know that, and I totally appreciate that convenience.
However, there gets to be a point where the convenience doesn't outweigh the cost, especially when the item is so easy to make yourself.
Nut milks are a great example. I have to admit that I really like store bought almond milk (especially the unsweetened vanilla almond milk). Whether or not you agree is up for you to decide, but have you ever tried pecan milk? No? Well, you are in for a treat!! Pecan milk is so tasty!
When I saw pecan milk in a juice place the other day, I decided that I was not interested in paying almost $10 for 16 ounces thank you very much. I have a bag of pecans and a blender; I can make it myself!
So I did, and I'm here to tell you that you need to try pecan milk. Don't get me wrong, I love almond milk and dairy milk as much as the next girl, but sometimes you gotta switch things up, ya know?!

Making nut milk is quite simple. Soak your nut of choice (or a mixture of nuts... almonds + pecans are a great combo) overnight. Then drain and add to a blender. Add water, and blend really well. Then strain using a cheese cloth or nut milk bag. Voila! You have nut milk.
I like to add dates, cinnamon and vanilla to mine to add some extra flavor & a touch of sweetness but those are optional. Make this your own, and enjoy!
Homemade Pecan Milk
- 1 cup pecans
- 4 dates
- 6 cups water divided
- 1 vanilla bean
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Put pecans and dates in a bowl and cover with 2 cups of water. Set aside for at least 12 hours -- best if they soak for at least 18 hours.
- Drain pecans & dates and add to a high powered blender. Scrape vanilla bean into the blender and add cinnamon. Cover with 4 cups of water and blend for at least 30 seconds.
- Pour mixture into a nut bag or cheesecloth over a bowl. Squeeze all of the liquid from the nuts. Transfer to a container and keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. Enjoy!
