Easy homemade pizza sauce with a lot less sodium and added sugar than store-bought. Tastes better too!

Pizza Sauce recipe from Living Well Kitchen

I've got another refreshed recipe from the archives for you today ~ Pizza Sauce.

Maybe Pizza Sauce doesn't seem exciting but it is!

Pizza Sauce can make or break your pizza.

Most store bought versions are higher in added sugar and/or sodium than I'd prefer. Unfortunately a lot of recipes I found were labor intensive or took too much time.

Pizza Sauce recipe from Living Well Kitchen

Enter canned tomato sauce and tomato paste.

    Add a little honey and some spices, and you have yourself a wonderful pizza sauce that can be used for more than just pizza {wait until you see what I have in store for you later this week. I'm super excited about it}

This basic pizza sauce recipe is great because it requires less than 5 minutes to make and it keeps for about one week in your fridge.

Pizza Sauce from Living Well Kitchen

The original recipe I made used parmesan cheese in the recipe, and I really love that! However, I didn't have parmesan in my fridge this morning so I left it out.

You are welcome to leave it out or put it in. Both sauces are delish and you'll be happy either way.

If I use this sauce for a pizza, I like having the parmesan in the pizza sauce because I feel like it helps the pizza sauce not slide off the pizza when I'm eating it.

It's like the parmesan helps melt the pizza sauce into the crust and it's sooo good.

It's not mandatory, so like I said before, just base it on your personal preference {or what you have at home}.

I always have tomato sauce and tomato paste in my pantry, so I can make this pizza sauce whenever needed. This pizza sauce also freezes well if you have leftovers that you aren't going to use in the next week.

    Ingredients

    • 8 ounce no-salt added tomato sauce
    • 6 ounce tomato paste
    • 6 oz warm water ยพ cup
    • 2 teaspoon honey
    • ยฝ teaspoon onion powder or dried onion flakes
    • ยฝ teaspoon garlic powder or 1 teaspoon minced garlic
    • 1 ยฝ teaspoon salt-free Italian seasoning
    • ยผ teaspoon salt
    • ยผ teaspoon red pepper flakes
    • ยผ teaspoon ground black pepper
    • ยผ cup parmesan cheese grated, about 1 oz (optional)

    Instructions

    • In a large plastic or glass bowl, whisk the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water together. Whisk in honey and all remaining ingredients. Can use immediately. Cover and refrigerate when not in use.
    • Best if covered tightly and let sit for at least an hour. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for 3 months.
    • I like to freeze the sauce in ยฝ cup sections, so I can defrost the amount I need to make a pizza.

    Notes

*The nutrition facts do not include parmesan cheese.
*For more flavor, use ยฝ teaspoon salt and add parmesan cheese. This will increase the sodium to about 175 mg per 4 tablespoon serving.
    *Makes 2.5 cups (20 ounces)
