Five tips for having an enjoyable eating experience away from home that doesn't leave you feeling guilty or overly stuffed, bloated, or deprived.

Enjoying Eating Out from Living Well Kitchen

When life gets busy, caring for your body can easily get pushed aside.

What's one thing that happens when you're busy? Well, if you're like the majority of people, you eat out more often.

Eating out should be an enjoyable experience like all experiences should be when it comes to feeding your body. If you are feeling guilty or shameful or deprived or some negative feeling regarding eating out, then it's time we change that!

So today, I've got five tips for having an enjoyable eating experience away from home that doesn't leave you feeling guilty, overly stuffed, bloated or on the other end of the spectrum: deprived.

    1) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Staying hydrated will help you adequately gauge how hungry you really are. Thirst is often mistaken as a sign of hunger, so being hydrated will help your body know how hungry it actually is.

    2) Fill your plate with produce

Instead of forcing yourself to fill half your plate with veggies, see if you can challenge yourself to get in as many veggies as possible because you know how energized you'll feel -- not because you are trying to avoid eating "unhealthy" food

Make it a game with yourself. How many veggies can you get in this meal?!

    3) Pick your protein

The protein you choose should be delicious and satisfying.

Don't pick your protein based on what is "healthy" or "good for you." And don't avoid any protein because it's "bad for you" or "junk food."

Pick a protein by the way it will make you feel after eating. It should also make you feel energized, not sick or nauseous or bloated.

    4) Don't forget the fiber

Your body needs fiber for digestion. Fiber also helps you to feel full, so you aren't hungry 30 minutes after your meal.

Whole-grain carbohydrates are one of the easiest ways to get in fiber. Look for carbohydrates that are high in fiber like lentils, beans, peas, potatoes, and whole grain pastas & breads.

    5) Play favorites

What is your favorite thing at that restaurant? Get it and enjoy it. Don't sacrifice your happiness by depriving yourself, but remember to get something you absolutely love and take the time to truly savor it!

#1 is so important and the one I struggle most with--I've been trying to drag a water bottle with me everywhere I go!

Yes!! Me too! I am getting a lot better at staying hydrated, but it's definitely something I struggle with every day
